Support for Young Carers to continue in 2014!

You won’t get any stick from Blackpool Carers’ Centre – we rate our partnership with Blackpool Hockey Festival as an absolute Easter cracker, the jolliest hockey sticks around.

The dream team has raised more than £1000 for our crucial frontline work with Young Carers helping us develop a real safety net for children and young adults who need all the support they can get.

And it’s fun. Ask Sian Howarth, 23, our Young Carers’ Family Support Worker – who has played hockey since she was 16 years old and plays for Gee Force Navy Team at the festival…while flying the flag for Carers too.

Sian says the festival, now in its 63rd year, is a great way of raising awareness of the Carers’ Centre, particularly through allied fundraising events such as the tug ‘o’ war.

“People are really keen to do things to help raise our profile and make others aware of Young Carers and the work we do. The emphasis is on fun and fundraising. It’s a really great weekend.”

Each year the event goes from strength to strength – with almost 50 teams and 30 umpires from across the UK and Northern Ireland attending BHF14 this April. That’s 1000 people in the resort – and a real vote of confidence in the support of so many individuals and groups who want to put Blackpool well and truly on the national hockey map.

What’s more, we would also like to take this opportunity to pay a special tribute to George Robson, President and Chairman of the Blackpool Easter Hockey Festival for his sterling work. This year marks his 50th attendance. Happy half centenary George!
