Happy Birthday Simon!

From everyone at BHF, Happy 50th (40th) Birthday to Umpire Simon Widdison. If you see him on the pitch, give him a hard time and if you see him off the pitch, why not buy him a well deserved beer!

In his younger days, before picking up the whistle Simon was rumoured to be a good striker.  He has hardly scored since, but at least gets his own way. Simon is…err…an avid Spurs fan too, but don’t hold this against him if you see him on the pitch today!

We have been told by one of his closest friends that Simon loves his umpiring so much every weekend is like a mini celebration, and to mark it he likes to throw his cards around like confetti! Simon stated “it’s oh so pretty and colourful!” They also added that Simon invested in radio mics just to make sure the other umpire, as well as the players, had no choice but to listen to him! Oh joy!

Recognising pink was not the most flattering colour, Simon trained hard and this year switched pink for the more subtle green and orange of National League. A well deserved step up and one Simon made with ease. Plus, what’s better than sending off cocky average hockey players, than sending off cocky talented ones. 2 minute green cards also enabled Simon to live the dream this year.

On a serious note though congratulations on becoming a National League umpire this season!

…now, should we mention the stupid bart Simpson tattoo?
