How #BHF2014 was won – Men

After the completion of the round robin games on Sunday, Swins Stags (Richmond HC) found themselves in second place setting up a semi-final game against Scottish side, The Dyes (Touring Team). Swins Stags saw off the challenge from most of the men’s teams except for favourites Colour Purple (Combined Services U25s) who topped the Men’s League.

Dirty Mike and the Boys (Morpeth HC), finishing fourth, booked their place in the semi-finals, resulting in them playing top of the pile, Colour Purple. This set up a rerun of the BHF2013 semi-final, where the Combined Service side were victorious.

It was evident from the word go, Dirty Mike and the Boys, were out for revenge from the previous year and following a dramatic 25 minutes, the game ended goalless. Dirty Mike and the Boys regrouped and managed to turnover the Combined Services side 3-2 in penalty shuffles. The second semi-final ended with Swins Stags confidently beating touring side The Dyes 5-2.

With the favourites being knocked out in the semi-finals, the scene was set for a spectacular final match. With the game finishing 1-1, the 2014 title would be decided by penalty shuffles from the 23 metre line. Each team would have 3 each, with a sudden death shuffle to follow if still no result.

After the first set of three shuffles, the scores were tied at 2-2 meaning sudden death! Finally, after two further rounds of shuttles, Richmond slotted home the winner to become BHF Mens Champions.
