How #BHF2015 was won – Mixed
Out of the staggering 26 Mixed teams that entered BHF15, the line-up of the four for the Easter Monday semi’s was The Weigh Anchors (Maltese Olympic Touring Team) versus the Incredibles (Touring Side) and The Jamaican Hopscotch Mafia (Burton HC) versus Multiple Scorgasms (University of Ulster – Coleraine). Both semi-finals were played at the same time and were equally as tense with the score lines being as close as they have been for many years. The Weigh Anchors edged a 1-0 win over The Incredibles and over on the second astro-pitch The Jamaican Hopscotch Mafia also narrowly won over the determined Northern Irish side.
The battle lines were drawn as The Weigh Anchors were chasing their second BHF title in three years and The Jamaican Hopscotch Mafia were after avenging their narrow defeat in last year’s mixed final. After a very tense 15 minutes where both sides threatened each other’s 23 metre area but could not get a shot off, The Jamaican Hopscotch Mafia got the break-through they wanted when a defensive error outside the 23 metre line forced a rapid four against three attack against the run of play which ended up with the ball being played around the goalkeeper and in the bottom right hand corner for Burton’s first goal. Five minutes later the second came about again against the run of play from an interception where the goalkeeper was beaten with a reverse stick shot into the roof of the net.
With only seconds on the clock there was an injury from a slap hit ball which caused the Burton defender to fall to the ground. After some rapid first aid attention the player concerned was up on their feet again with sporting applause from the crowd and seconds later the final hooter had sounded, Burton had comeback from their defeat in last year’s final to be come 2-0 winners and lift the BHF15 Mixed competition crown.
